I once had a bottle-green corduroy suit that I would wear for "smart" occasions. This wasn't quite as bad as it sounds because it was 1970s so I didn't stand out. Everyone was wearing clothes that today seem laughable. The jacket had a belt, and I think there were outside pockets, safari-suit style. But in green corduroy. One redeeming feature was that the fabric had a soft, almost velvety finish. Or maybe that doesn't make it better.
I only wore it when I had to. I wasn't stupid. Most of the had-to occasions were going to the theatre with my extended family. I've never seen this as a dress occasion. You spend most of the time in the dark. But the keeping up of appearances was more important then, so I knew I'd only get a lot of disapproval if I didn't wear it.
I don't think that any photos exist of me in it. Lucky reader, eh?
