Besides Dreamwidth I've been on LiveJournal, Vox (doesn't exist any longer), Facebook, Twitter (two accounts), and probably some others I've forgotten. So obviously I need Tumblr as well.

I downloaded a new version of Semagic today. There hasn't been a new version for years, so while I was downloading, I had a poke around and found a graph of Semagic downloads over time. It's basically tailed off to nothing.

Of course, if anything I wrote was to get the number of downloads I just called "nothing", I'd be astonished.

Wii'd off

Wii channels are closing down. No news or weather, and now Nobody Votes. Internet channel still works - using it to type this. Can't help but remember the fuss and bother we had getting the thing...

DW news

DW news says you can make your subscription filters public. For anyone familair with LJ, that's like public friend groups.

To celebrate, here is the funny. 8~)

I hate the 80:20 rule, the law of diminishing returns. I want to do 100% of something, but time and/or energy run out before I get there. Life is full of loose ends, of unfinished things, of things that aren't quite right.

I could deal with some of this by procrastinating less, by not doing some things at all to make time for others, or by being less perfectionist.

I could accept the inevitability of being a bit crap and attain serene detachment.

Or I could have an idea for a blog entry about it, and then be disappointed that it didn't come out as well as I thought it could have.

Long live the new Kingdom of Banamia!

With cherubs, but not much else...

Web site

I haven't had a web site (besides this blog) for several years. I had two different ISPs in the past who included web space, but those sites disappeared because the ISPs shut down.

I've just noticed that I can host a site a sourceforge. I have a local copy of my previous site, but I'm not sure whether to update that and put it back up, or whether to start afresh...

So, I've been here on DW for a while now. I like it, but a list of pros and cons may help (me, at least).
Pro
  • It's not LJ, not so owned and run by people for whom my feelings are between unsure and plain old hostile, and so I'm confident that they aren't doing their best to make money out of me in underhand ways while providing the minimal service they can get away with.
  • There seems to be a lively developer community, which is a positive sign for the future.
  • Lots of women are involved - big up the sisterhood (or something).
  • It's dead easy to use (though as I'm a long time LJ user, perhaps I'm in an unusual position here).
Con
  • There's no photo hosting. I'm still using LJ scrapbook, but I'm not too excited about it. I have a flickr account, but I like the idea of keeping my photos where my blog lives.
  • I don't know anyone on here. Hmm, this is a big problem. I know people on LJ, and know several of them very well. I can syndicate their stuff to here, but it's not the same. I was excited about the off-site friends project and saddened when it didn't happen. At the moment I only see LJ public posts, so some people I never see at all.

I'd like to make more friends here, and sometimes go looking for people, but the usership is skewed towards "fandom", which is of no interest to me. I even had to put it in quotes. One good way to make new friends is through the people you already know, but that relies on already knowing some people...
Executive summary: I'd like this to work, but I'm talking to myself. Ho hum.

Twaddle

I have a twitter account where I manage to write even less interesting stuff than I do here. I tried to write something very slightly interesting about learning a programming language, but I ran out of room.

Tentative conclusion: it's impossible to be interesting on twitter. Even this very slight post would be far too big.

The exception seems to be posting a link, provided you use a URL shortening service.

I can use Phoenix to post to DW, but XJournal doesn't seem so co-operative. Haven't tried iJournal.

Tag news

I mentioned that I couldn't tag my DW posts in Semagic, but I've just noticed that it works now. I wonder why. I wrote some LJ posting stuff for Jix, but I didn't try tags so I have no idea how they work for a client.

I can tag my LJ entries when I'm posting them from Semagic, but I can't tag my DW entries. Somewhat ironically, I didn't bother with tags on LJ but I've been using them on DW. Ho hum.

I hope that DW is a success. But now I have to decide whether to dis-engage from LJ. Aargh!
